It was the defending champions’ first win of the league championship and was hard-fought after a goalless opening half. Al Sadd could have added one more to the tally, but Giovani Henrique missed an open net just shooting wide to the right in added time.

Al Sadd gained lead in the match, with Pedro unleashing a superb kick from the edge of the box into the far top right corner of the net.

Afif notched his first goal of the new league season bursting out to catch a Roberto Firmino through ball while beating a chasing defender and the goalkeeper.

Al Ahli too had their chances in the match, but they missed the target by inches on a few occasions while Al Sadd goalkeeper Meshaal Barsham cut off one potential strike.

Pedro Miguel was named as Player of the Match.
