
The first half was a tight and techy affair in the Azadi stadium, with both sides creating few chances of note. Lekhwiya came closest in the first half to taking the lead when Luis Martin’s shot from distance smacked against the post on the 15th minute.
Persepolis ratcheted up the pressure in the second half, pushing back the QSL champions back for the remainder of the tie. With ten minutes left to play, the Iranian side was awarded a penalty when Ali Afif was adjudged to have bundled down Mehdi Taremi in the box. The striker duly stepped up to take the penalty, but was denied by Red Knights keeper Qasem Burhan who pulled of a save to keep the scores level.
