Al Rayyan were established in 1967 after the merging of old Al Rayyan and Al Nusoor sports clubs. The Lions, as they are nicknamed, have enjoyed a trophy-laden past and have won the league championship eight times.
Al Rayyan last lifted the league shield in the 2015-16 season, which was their first title in 21 years.
Al Rayyan have a large and passionate fan base, and are a regular presence in all tournaments. They have a special place in Qatar football and contributed a huge number of players to various national teams.

Portuguese coach Artur Jorge took over Al Rayyan during the 2024-2025 season, succeeding national coach Younes Ali.
Artur has a distinguished coaching career during which he achieved success with a number of teams, most notably Brazilian club Botafogo, whom he guided to triumph in the Brazilian League Championship and Copa Libertadores (thereby qualification for 2025 Club World Cup in the US), and coached the team at the 2024 Intercontinental Cup hosted by the State of Qatar in December, 2024.
He also coached his native side Sporting Braga, achieving distinguished results with them including the league title and qualification for Champions League.
As a player, he represented Sporting Braga, Penafiel and Tercena in Portugal.
