Umm Salal came from behind to secure a 1-1 victory against QNB Stars League newcomers Al Markhiya in their Week 11 match at the Al Arabi Stadium on Friday.

Umm Salal now have 16 points and Al Markhiya seven.

Striker Kwame Karikari opened the scoring in the 12th minute and Umm Salal’s equaliser came through Adil Rhaili in the 57th.

In a match that saw few chances, it was Al Markhiya who got off to a flying start through Karikari. Some intricate play through the centre of the field led to him receiving the ball on the edge of the area before firing a ferocious shot into the far corner.

Umm Salal thought they had equalised midway through the half, but the goal was ruled to be offside. Yannick Sagbo had pounced on a rebound with an unstoppable shot from distance. However, replays showed Umm Salal players were in an offside position while blocking the goalkeeper’s view.

After the interval, it was again Sagbo on the attack, this time with a shot from far out that was pushed to safety by the keeper. The resulting corner got flicked on and Rhaili crept in at the back post with a header to bring the scores level.

Both sides sought a late winner, with Rahili again coming close, but his outstretched boot did not quite make contact with a cross when in on goal.

At the other end, Nasser Al Nasr saw his drive being blocked before Umm Salal keeper Basel Zeidan kept out the follow-up.
