Al Sadd lifted their first ever Qatar Cup as Spanish superstar, Xavi picked up his first winners medal since he arrived to Qatar. Goals from Algerian attackers Baghdad Bounedjah and Jugurtha Hamroun sealed the Qatar Cup for the Wolves who fought off a fight back from El Jaish, who equalized through Sardor Rashidov.
Al Sadd controlled the game for much of the first half, and duly began to press El Jaish. In the sixth minute Al Sadd’s semi final hero, Algerian winger Jugurtha Hamroun shaw his shot sailed over the bar.
In the twenty first minute Al Sadd took a well deserved lead though Baghdad Bounedjah. The Algerian striker calmly brought down a long ball inside the box sent over by team mate Hassan Haydos and promptly smashed the ball into the back of the net past Jaish keeper Khalifa Ababacar.
With seven minutes left in the first half Sabri Lamochi’s side from parity courtesy of winger Sardor Rashidov. The Uzbek international timed his run perfectly as he received an incisive diagonal ball Yasser Abubakar. The striker then slotted the ball under Al Sadd keeper, Saad Al Dossari to make it 1-1.Reinvigorated by the equalising goal El Jaish continued attacking right until the end of the first half but Al Sadd held on to end the half with both sides level pegging at 1-1.
The second half was all about the Wolves who dominated the last forty five minutes of the game. They made their attacking intentions clear when number 10 Hassan Haydos sent his header over the bar, six minutes into the second half. Visibly frustrated, Jaish midfielders Mohammad Mothnani Yasser Abubakar picked up yellow cards for careless tackles.
With just over fifteen minutes to play, Al Sadd struck a spectacular winner from Jugurtha Hamroun. The Algerian attacker received a pass from the right at the edge off the box before sweetly striking the ball into the top left hand corner.
Sadd were in the ascendancy and could of grabbed a third of the evening had captain Xavi’s close-range hadnt fell straight into the hands of the Jaish keeper, Khalifa Ababacar. Whilst in the eighty third minute Hassan Haydos went for a spectacular chip which went over the keeper and hit the cross bar denying the Qatari international a goal at the last.
Al Sadd held on till the final whistle and recorded a famous victory as they lifted their first ever Qatar Cup. It was a momentous occasion for Xavi Hernandez as he won his first trophy in Qatar and his name was sung by the Al Sadd fans. The Wolves fans were treated to a brilliant performance by their team who fell just short in the league but lifting the glorious cup did put a smile on the face off the Al Sadd faithful.
