Younes Ahmed

When discussing the goalkeepers who have made a significant impact in Qatar football, Younes Ahmed is undoubtedly at the forefront, recognized for his exceptional skills on the field and his long-standing association with Al Rayyan club, whose jersey he donned for more than 21 consecutive years, safeguarding their goal and securing numerous championships.

Born on July 17, 1963, Younes embarked on his football journey at a young age, quickly garnering attention for his extraordinary talent. He joined Al Rayyan in 1977 at the tender age of 14 and from that moment, he remained devoted to the club’s colours, a loyalty that persisted until his retirement in 1998, making him one of the longest-serving players for a single club in the annals of Qatar football.

During his illustrious tenure with Al Rayyan, Younes achieved remarkable success, clinching six league titles (1977-78, 1981-82, 1983-84, 1985-86, 1989-90, 1994-95), along with two Amir Cup triumphs (1995 and 1996) and Sheikh Jassim Cup in 1992.

Younes’ excellence extended beyond domestic competitions; he was a pivotal member of the national team, earning over 75 international caps. His participation in the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games stands out as a significant milestone in his career. He made his debut with the Qatar youth team in 1981, where he played five international matches.

Although he was unable to be part of the victorious squad for the 1992 Gulf Cup due to an injury, he represented Qatar in four editions of the tournament, beginning with the 1986 edition in Bahrain, followed by 1990 edition in Kuwait, 1994 edition in the UAE and 1996 edition in Oman. He was honoured with the Best Goalkeeper award at the 13th Gulf Cup in 1996 and played a crucial role in two final appearances during the 1990 and 1996 tournaments, where Al Annabi finished as runners-up.

Younes was recognized for his steadfast determination, rapid reflexes, and optimal positioning within the penalty area. Additionally, he exhibited a leadership quality that inspired confidence among his teammates during matches. His astute understanding of the game and his composure in the most challenging situations were pivotal in securing numerous vital victories for Al Rayyan and national team.

Younes transcended the role of a mere goalkeeper. He embodied loyalty and a sense of belonging, serving as an inspiring success narrative for future generations. He was a player who represented the symbols of his club and country with utmost sincerity, leaving a lasting impact on the legacy of Qatar football, with his name forever inscribed in the chronicles of excellence. He stands as one of the finest goalkeepers ever produced by the Gulf stadiums.
