Al Rayyan will begin their 2026-2027 season Doha Bank Stars League campaign against newly-promoted Lusail in an eagerly-awaited opening-round encounter at Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium on Thursday, August 20, 2026. The kick-off is at 7.30pm.
Al Rayyan enter the match determined to make a strong start, aiming to compete for top positions and titles this season, while Lusail will make history with their first appearance in Qatar’s top flight following their promotion as Second Division champions last season.
The Lions made 13 personnel changes ahead of the season, bringing in five players while eight departed.
Ahmed Al Janahi, Jassim Al Sharshani, Yousef Ayman, Diogo Amaro and Daouda Diakite are the new arrivals, with the additions expected to strengthen different areas of the squad while complementing the established players who remain at the heart of the team.
Al Rayyan also underwent an extensive pre-season programme, holding their overseas training camp in Spain from July 15 to August 5.
The camp was designed to improve the players’ physical and technical readiness while helping the new signings develop greater understanding and cohesion with their teammates.
During their stay in Spain, Al Rayyan played four friendly matches against opponents from different footballing backgrounds.
They began with an entertaining 3-3 draw against English side Rochdale before suffering a narrow 1-0 defeat against Spanish outfit Albacete. Al Rayyan then bounced back with a 2-1 victory over Saudi Arabia’s Al Diriyah before concluding their friendly programme with a 2-1 loss against Spanish side Leganes.
Lusail, meanwhile, will step onto the Doha Bank Stars League stage for the first time amid considerable interest following their impressive promotion campaign.
After winning the Second Division title and earning direct promotion, the newcomers have been among the most active clubs in the transfer market as they prepare for the considerably-greater challenge of top-flight football.
Lusail made 19 changes to their squad, with eight players arriving and 11 departing as the club sought to build a team capable of competing against Qatar’s established sides.
Among the new additions are Khaled Mohammed, Ali Malallah, Amir Hassan, Hossam Kamal, Omid Ebrahimi, Khaled Waleed and Naif Al Hadrami, while Spanish forward Rodrigo Moreno provides further experience and quality.
The extensive recruitment reflects Lusail’s determination to assemble a competitive squad for their historic first season among Qatar’s elite.
Under Portuguese coach Emanuel Mesquita, Lusail held their pre-season training camp in the Netherlands from July 13 to August 1.
The promoted side endured a difficult start to their friendly programme with a 5-0 defeat against Dordrecht but responded impressively by beating Den Bosch 2-1. They also held Volendam to a goalless draw as Mesquita continued to assess his squad ahead of the new season.
Tomorrow’s encounter carries contrasting objectives for the two teams but equal importance.
For Al Rayyan, victory would provide an early indication of their determination to challenge strongly this season following their summer rebuilding programme.
For Lusail, the match represents a landmark occasion and an opportunity to demonstrate that the newly-promoted side can compete against the league’s established heavyweights.
With Al Rayyan eager to make an early statement and Lusail seeking a memorable beginning to their maiden top-flight campaign, an intriguing contest awaits at Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium.
