The name Jorge Fossati is fairly popular in Qatar football circles. The 63-year-old Uruguayan has spent a number of years in Qatar, biding his time as coach of top clubs or even the national side of Qatar (2007-2008).

Say Fossati and fans of Qatar Stars Leagus (QSL) sides Al Sadd and Al Rayyan will tell you he has been a popular figure inside their change rooms and on the touchlines for the two teams.

A vastly experienced coach, Fossati guided Al Sadd to AFC Champions League title in 2011 when the Doha giants beat Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors of South Korea in the final.

Al Sadd won 4–2 on penalties after a 2–2 draw following extra time.

Just days later after winning the Asian title, Fossati-coached Al Sadd entered the quarter-finals of the 2011 FIFA Club World Cup as the AFC representative.

Three years earlier, Fossati managed the Qatar national side in the 2007-08 season, helping the team sail through the initial stage of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, Asian Zone, qualifiers.

Fossati had to give way to Bruno Metsu midway the qualifiers on account of ill health in September 2008.

A goalkeeper of decent merit during his younger days, Fossati was quick to seek management soon after retiring from the sport in 1990.

Fossati, fluent in Portuguese, had spells at River Plate Montevideo Penarol and Danubio F.C. in Uruguay. Later he switched to Colon de Santa Fe in Argentina, Cerro Porteno in Paraguay and LDU Quito in Ecuador.

He became manager of the Uruguayan national team in 2004, followed by a stint at Al Sadd and after winning all four domestic titles with the Doha giants, Fossati was unveiled as the new Qatari national team manager in 2007.

From 2009 onward, Fossati had managerial stints at Ecuadorian club LDU Quito, Sport Club Internacional, Al-Shabab, Al Sadd and Club Cerro Porteño. In 2013, he signed a two years contract with United Arab Emirates champions Al Ain.

In the summer of 2015, it was announced Fossati would take up the reigns at newly-promoted Al Rayyan.

In the first six months of the 2015-16 QSL season, Al Rayyan have looked invincible, emerging as runaway points leaders as the league heads to a close in April.
