Workers’ Cup kicks off in grand style
The sixth edition of Workers’ Cup, the annual football tournament organised by the Qatar Stars League (QSL) and sponsored by the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy (SC), kicked off in grand style at the Al Duhail Stadium on Friday, 2nd February.
QSL CEO Hani Taleb Ballan and Marketing and Communications Department Acting Executive Director Hassan Al Kuwari greeted the players at the opening ceremony, attended by fans in large numbers.
“The Workers’ Cup has grown in popularity ever since it was launched in 2003. It’s serving its purpose and gaining strength after every edition. The tournament has a huge impact on the community mainly because it engages workers who are partners in the success of 2022 FIFA World Cup or other projects in Qatar,” said Hani, hailing the good attendance of spectators at the opening ceremony.
Over 32 teams and 640 players, representing various companies in Qatar, including 12 former and current contractors engaged on the 2022 FIFA World Cup projects and seven sides engaged with the SC’s flagship CSR programme Generation Amazing, are battling it out in the tournament being played on Fridays. The final is scheduled for 23rd March.
Shapoorji Pallonji defeated Gulf Contracting Company 2-0 in the opening match played in front of loudly-cheering 6,000 spectators.
In other matches, Taleb Group trounced Boom 6-0, Spartan Ready Mix beat QDVC 6-1, L&T Qatar defeated Galfar Al Misnad 2-0, Doha Pest Control prevailed over Cofley Besix Mannai 1-0, ALYSJ beat Galfar 3-0, Trags Engineering routed Pigeon Engineering 15-0, Black Cat defeated G4S Qatar 1-0, AG Middle East scored over Al Balagh L&t JV 1-0, Medgulf held AALCO goalless, HBK beat DicoTech Qatar 1-0, Al Asmakh played out a 1-1 draw with Mowasalat, Trags Trading downed Schindler 14-0, Nakheel beat Bouygues 18-0 and NAAAS edged youth Club 1-0.
