Al Wakrah continued their good run by beating Al Gharafa 2-0 in Week 21 of the 2020-21 season QNB Stars League at the Al Duhail Stadium on Tuesday.

Mohamed Benyettou (46th minute) and Abdulrahman Mohammed (62nd minute) scored the goals as Al Wakrah improved their points tally to 22 with their sixth victory.

Al Wakrah stretched their unbeaten run to four matches, having drawn with Qatar SC goalless, beaten Al Sailiya 1-0 and held newly-crowned champions Al Sadd to a 1-1 draw in Weeks 17, 18 and 19 respectively.

Al Gharafa remained on 30 points and missed another chance to return to the top four.

It was The Cheetahs’ eighth defeat. They had lost 1-3 to Al Ahli in Week 19.

The match was originally scheduled for 6th April along with other Week 21 games, but was rescheduled in view of Al Gharafa’s play-off with Uzbekistan’s FC AGMK in Doha on 7th April, 2021, for a berth in the 2021 AFC Champions League group stage.

The first real chance of the match came Al Gharafa’s way in the 18th minute, but a shot by Ahmed Al Janehi, after he was put through by Sofiane Hanni, was saved by Al Wakrah goalkeeper Saoud Al Khater who exhibited good reflex.

Three minutes later, Al Gharafa’s young star Homam Al Ameen came up with a long-range grounder and Al Khater pouched it.

Homam was at it again in the 24th minute, but this time, he hit wide of the far post from the left.

Al Gharafa attacked mostly through the wings.

For Al Wakrah, Benyettou, Abdulrahman Mohammed and Khalid Muneer made unsuccessful attempts at the goal in the first half.

Al Wakrah came on for second-half play by fielding Omar Ali and Mohammed Emad, and the move immediately paid off as the former assisted Benyettou for the first goal with a cross from the right.

Al Wakrah were on the surge and Benyettou headed over a Murad Naji corner kick in the 50th minute.

Benyettou played a significant role in the second goal too, as Abdulrahman Mohammed played a one-two with him before finding the target after outplaying rival defenders Homam and Yousef Muftah.

Al Gharafa then effected a few substitutions, including that of their spearhead Jonathan Kodjia, but failed to find a breakthrough.

Al Gharafa had beaten Al Wakrah 1-0 in the first leg of 2020-21 season QNB Stars League.
