QNB Stars League Week 20 — Al Ahli 0 Al Markhiya 2

Bottom-ranked Al Markhiya produced a feisty performance to beat Al Ahli 2-0, with the second goal coming deep into injury time, in Week 20 of the QNB Stars League on Saturday.

Leonardo de Souza opened the scoring in the 44th minute while Mohammed El Neel converted a penalty with the final kick of the game (90+9) at the Al Ahli Stadium.

Eric de Oliveira, Al Markhiya’s Brazilian attacking midfielder, underlined his intentions from the onset, slipping into the Al Ahli box before unleashing a low ball that missed the far goalpost in just the sixth minute.

In the 16th minute, referee booked Al Ahli’s Benson for bringing down Salah as both teams split ball possession stats at 49-51 in favour of Al Markhiya.

Ten minutes later, Nassir Al Nasr of Al Markhiya dabbled at a long cross from the flank, but his shot from the edge of the box was well pounced by Al Ahli keeper Naim Hussain.

Exactly at the half-hour mark, Al Markhiya’s tireless midfielder Salah unloaded a left-footed drive from the edge of the box, but the ball was palmed away by a diving Hussain. Five minutes before the first-half whistle, Al Markhiya’s Salah produced another long-range missile that was once again saved by keeper Hussain.

In a major miss by the hosts, Al Ahli’s Mohsin Al Yazidi, with an open target to shoot at, slapped the ball above the Al Markhiya crossbar with the goalkeeper completely beaten.

A minute before the half-time whistle, De Souza flicked one home from close range after the Al Ahli goalkeeper blocked the shot of De Oliveira.

In the 70th, Al Markhiya’s Under-23 player Ibrahim unleashed a long-range shot from the edge of the Al Ahli box, but his swinging shot was well pouched by keeper Hussain. In the 80th, Mohammed Muntari produced what would have been a late equaliser, but his tap from close range was ruled off-side.

Off the final touch of the game, El Neel converted from the spot kick.
