QNB Stars League Week 1 — Al Sailiya 2 Umm Salal 1


A winner off the final kick of the match by striker Abdulqadir Ilyas helped Al Sailiya beat Umm Salal 2-1 in Week 1 of the 2018-19 season QNB Stars League at the Khalifa International Stadium on Saturday.

Abdulqadir had scored at the stroke of half-time whistle as well.

Ivorian striker Yannick Sagbo helped Umm Salal draw level in the 81st minute, but Al Sailiya were not to be denied of a win.

In a unity to welcome the start of new season, Al Sailiya players got into a team huddle before the kick-off and then moved quickly to put pressure on Umm Salal.

In the 18th minute, Abdulqadir broke away from his marker and charged into the Umm Salal box. His shot from close beat goalkeeper Baba Malick, but the ball slipped past the goalpost.

Three minutes later, it was winger Nadir Belhadj’s turn to break free of his marker, but his left-footed shot was expertly blocked by Malick, standing just a few feet away from the Umm Salal crossbar.

In another Al Sailiya attack, Moroccan striker Rachid Tiberkanine missed the mark narrowly.

A minute from half-time, a mistake by Malick allowed Al Sailiya to take the lead.

Four minutes into the second half, Umm Salal’s Ismail Mahmoud went for a long-range shot that narrowly sailed above the Al Sailiya crossbar.

Two minutes later, Ghanaian George Kwasi of Al Sailiya was booked with a yellow card for a reckless tackle on Sagbo.
