Doha Pest Control, Nakheel win semifinals
Doha Pest Control defeated Al Asmakh F.M. 8-7 on penalties in the first semifinal of the Sixth Workers Cup. The tie-breaker was enforced when the teams played out a 1-1 draw after 50 minutes of regulation time at the Al Duhail Stadium on Friday, 9th March.
In the other semifinal played at the same venue, holders Nakheel put it across ALYSJ 4-2, also in tie-breaker, after they were locked 1-1 at full time.
Al Asmakh took the lead in the 21st minute through Shehu when a defensive mix-up between Samuel, Patrick Owusu and Joseph Gyasi saw him race through on goal. And Shehu made no mistake.
However, Doha Pest Control recovered well to dominate the proceedings for most of the match. Their efforts bore fruit in the 43rd minute when Dennis met a great cross from Samuel Kofi with a header past Denis Ofori of Al Asmakh.
The score stayed level and the game moved to penalties.
In the shoot-out, neither goalkeeper saved the first five kicks. Both teams then matched each other right until sudden death when a brilliant save from Doha Pest Control keeper gave his side the chance to head for the final.
In the second last-four clash, ALYSJ’s dream run in the tournament, organised by the Qatar Stars League and sponsored by Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy, suffered penalty agony.
Nakheel were vastly superior to ALYSJ over the course of the game, but the resilience and organisation that swiftly became the trademark of ALYSJ throughout the competition took an enthralling game to penalties.
Mohammed Ait Braik put Nakheel ahead in the 28th minute, only to see ALYSJ draw level through Ibrahim Makido in the 45th.
As in the other semifinal, both sides entered the crucial phase, but it was ALYSJ who were left heartbroken.
Vincent and Ibrahim were successful from the spot, but Ali Awadu struck the bar and Mustafa’s effort was saved by Nakheel goalkeeper Annasse Youssef.
The third-place play-off, between Al Asmakh F.M. and ALYSJ, is scheduled for 16th March and final for 23rd March at the Al Duhail Stadium. Matches are played on Fridays in the tournament that started on 2nd February. Entry is free for the public.
