Al Gharafa captain Luis Jimenez in an Exclusive Interview with QSL Online

‘What matters to me more is the team’s victory’

Despite the fact that Al Gharafa have many quality players, be it professionals and nationals, their results so far are not up to the mark. The Cheetahs are placed ninth with seven points and have been able to record just one victory. It has disappointed their fans as well.

In an Exclusive Interview with QSL Online ahead of their much-awaited game against Al Arabi, Al Gharafa captain Luis Jimenez spoke about various topics.

What’s your take on the game against Al Arabi?

Both teams will be looking to win and earn three valuable points. On our part, we’ll put in our best efforts in order to win the game.

What’s your expectation as far as the result is concerned?

I won’t talk about the result. The most important thing for us as a team is winning by any means.

You played for Al Arabi in the previous season. Now you’re in Al Gharafa… What’re the differences you feel?

Both Al Arabi and Al Gharafa are big teams in Qatar with many titles to their credit. They’re trying to regain their lost glory by breaking into the top four in the league alongside Al Duhail, Al Rayyan and Al Sadd.

I understand that football fans wish to see Al Arabi and Al Gharafa regain their reputation. I’m so glad to have played for both teams.

Which player has grabbed your attention in Al Arabi?

Al Arabi too have a number distinguished players. I truly like the performance of midfielder Ahmed Khalfan. Abdulla Maarafie is also a good player, but couldn’t play much due to injury.

Will the loss to Al Rayyan have an impact on your team?

What we’ve to do is build on all the positive aspects that emerged against Al Rayyan and avoiding mistakes. We don’t have enough time to think much about that defeat.

What were the reasons behind that loss?

We always play to win. Sometimes, the match ends in a tie or even defeat. Al Rayyan were strong opponents and title contenders.

Are you satisfied as a professional player?

I can’t say that I’m satisfied with my performance as I always look for improvement. However, I’m happy with my contribution to the team. I prefer talking about the team as a whole and not about individuals. We’ve faced some challenges and difficulties at the beginning of the league campaign as the new recruits took time to gel well.

Now, we’ve made much progress with the continuous work and positive efforts. I’m sure positive results will follow.

What’ll be your main role with Al Gharafa this season?

I always help my team-mates. We’re all one team with one target. I know that the fans are expecting me to score goals continuously, but I’m a playmaker and not a number (9) striker. Still, I can score. But I focus more on the team work.

What matters to me more is the team’s victory and not scoring goals. I always try to give assists and contribute to the team’s cause.

What’s your ambition this season?

Having reached the semifinals of QSL Cup, we’re looking forward to winning the title. As for the league, we aren’t satisfied with our position despite the fact that our main objective is build a strong team for the future. We aren’t under pressure to win the league, but we seek to reach higher position.

Can Al Gharafa win titles again?

The team is in the process of building after undergoing many changes this season. Many young players came in. We need time to prepare a strong team for the future. You can’t focus on the process of building up a strong squad and winning titles at the same time.

I know that Al Gharafa have a long history of winning titles. We just need time.

What would you like to tell Al Gharafa fans?

I would like to thank and appreciate their support towards the players. Of course, we’re sad over the negative results. We promise them that we’ll do our best in order to please them.
